Action-packed activities

As we get older, mental and physical stimulation continue to be important aspects of being healthy and happy. Here at Rowallan House, we believe that all people, regardless of their age, deserve to live a fulfilling life. Part of having an enriched life is taking part in activities that promote fun, bring joy and inspire creativity. Unfortunately, physical limitations, lack of access to resources or fewer social interactions with others can prevent older people from participating in activities that nourish the soul. That’s why we have a dedicated events and activities coordinator on hand to take care of all the planning for you.

Encouraging a fulfilled life

Despite any physical or mental changes in a person as they age, life is always more than just eating and sleeping. Engaging in activities and participating in events that encourage social interaction, stimulate the brain, enrich the spirit or bring a sense of calmness are core parts of being alive and being happy. While we recognise that you may not be able to live the same active lifestyle you used to, there’s no reason why age or physical changes should prevent you from having the fun you deserve. With help from our dedicated events and activities coordinator, we make play a key aspect of life at Rowallan House.

The importance of play in later life

As we grow older, we naturally become more vulnerable to health issues. Play and fun then become powerful activities that can bring major health benefits. For example, play has proven to prevent memory problems and improve brain function. It can also trigger the release of endorphins which reduces stress and increases a sense of contentment. Participating in activities that bring meaning can also reduce the negative impacts of mental health issues like anxiety and depression.

As well, sharing moments of laughter, joy and fun with others can bring an increased sense of connection and compassion. As the famous quote by George Bernard Shaw goes, ‘we don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing’.

It’s more fun at Rowallan House

There’s never a dull moment at Rowallan House. From quizzes to bingo and other games, there are no shortage of fun things to take part in. As movement is an important part of being healthy, we also have dance parties, drama activities and plenty of arts and crafts. Parties and other events are also often held in our garden throughout the year.

Outings and day trips are also regularly arranged to keep the explorers in us alive. These can include trips to the seaside, shopping trips and a dose of culture at the theatre and, of course, we can’t forget pub lunches.

For quieter activities that promote connection and intimacy, we take time to share life stories with each other and encourage our residents to share their histories.
