How dementia care can help

Dealing with dementia can be difficult for everyone involved. Dementia is a group of diseases caused by abnormal changes in the brain and affects a person’s ability to remember, think and communicate. It can even interfere with the ability to do everyday tasks or activities. Living with dementia does not mean it’s impossible to enjoy life but specialist care and support may be necessary. Read on to discover how dementia care can help you or your loved one live a fulfilled and happy life.

What is dementia?

Dementia is not a normal part of ageing. It’s a progressive disease and is characterised by a decline in cognitive function which can interfere with daily life and impede independence. For example, a person living with dementia may forget the names of their family or friends, get lost in a familiar neighbourhood, lose their belongings, miss appointments or even leave the stove on. Sadly, dementia can also affect a person’s mood, actions and relationships. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease.

The benefits of specialist dementia care

As mentioned earlier, dementia causes ongoing cognitive decline. These changes can affect a person’s ability to communicate, problem-solve, reason, remember and complete tasks safely and independently. While there is currently no cure for dementia, it’s possible to continue living well and enjoying life with the help of specialist dementia care.

Specialist dementia care strives to manage symptoms of dementia as much as possible while providing safety and assurance at all times. Dementia specialists have undergone advanced training to provide quality support and outstanding care to those living with dementia. Specialist dementia care does not only help those living with the condition, it also provides family members with the peace of mind they deserve.

How we help those with dementia

We believe that nurturing the individual is at the heart of dementia care. We do this by creating a calm and soothing environment that maximises security while supporting independence as much as possible.

Unfortunately, not every care home is equipped to understand and support those living with dementia. As long-term members of Dementia Friends and the Alzheimer’s Society, we are committed to keeping up to date with the latest information and medical advances in dementia care and treatment. All of our staff are specially trained and have a thorough understanding of how to handle the mental and emotional challenges of this condition.

In addition, as dementia care specialists, we carry out specific activities to support and nurture those experiencing dementia. For example, our sensory room allows our residents to safely explore their five senses. Combining light, music, movement and tactile objects, it can be used to calm or stimulate residents and relieve stress.

Finally, we also provide our residents with reminiscence and recall sessions. These are designed to encourage our residents to talk about their past and share their stories. This helps re-instil a sense of confidence for those living with dementia and enables them to actively engage with life, rather than have something done ‘to’ or ‘for’ them.
